American art dealer Tom Ripley tries to test the integrity of Jonathan Zimmermann, a humble frame maker who is terminally ill. Ripley introduces him to a gangster who offers him a lot of money in exchange for working for him as a hitman. He initially turns down the offer, but, thinking of the precarious future he holds for his wife and child after his death, he ends up accepting the deal.
