A convict is sent to a labour camp in China’s desolated northwest, during the country’s Cultural Revolution. Using his intelligence, and with the sole purpose of seeing his daughter, who has been filmed in a movie, he manages to escape and flees to the cinema in a nearby town. There he hopes to find the film and get his hands on it. However, there he comes across a homeless woman who is desperate to get hold of the same film reel and manages to steal it. Curiously, this enigmatic object, which they both crave for very different reasons, will become the root of an unexpected friendship.
