China, 1930s. A young woman is sent by her father to become the wife of the owner of a sorghum wine cellar, who is ill with leprosy. During the journey she falls in love with one of the escorts. When her husband dies, she is left in charge of the place, tending to bandits, her hard-drinking lover and the invading Japanese army.
