In the difficult post-war Japan, a boy named Tahei, who seems to be lost, has followed Tashiro to his humble house in the suburbs, shared with Tamekichi. Tashiro takes pity on the child and intends to let him spend the night with them, but Tamekichi refuses. Finally, Tashiro gets an elderly woman in the neighborhood, a sour-natured widow, to reluctantly take care of the child. The next day, the woman takes the boy to her neighborhood and discovers that his father has abandoned him.
