Shanghai, 1942. The city is occupied by the Japanese. Mrs. Mak, a wealthy and sophisticated woman, remembers how it all began in 1938 China. Her real name is not Mak, but Wong Chia Chi. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, her father fled to England and left her in China. While studying at university she met Kuang Yu Min, who had just founded a theatre company to promote patriotism. Wong Chia Chi became the company's first actress. Kuang convinced a group of students to assassinate Mr. Yee, an important collaborator of the Japanese.
