Sweden, beginning of the XXth century. Fanny and Alexander are brother and sister of a liberal family dedicated to the theater business. Suddenly, their father dies and the mother marries again with a luteran bishop. They move to his austere place, without knowing they are leaving the quiet life full of affection they had before. The bishop is a severe and strict man that, supported by his mother, his sister and a maid, imposes an evil and sinister discipline. Alexander, an imaginatve dreamer boy, suffers above all the consequences.
