The Black Death plague devastates Europe. Knight Antonius Block comes back home to his Swedish village, accompanied by his squire. After ten years of war at the Crusades, Antonius is a man tormented by his doubts about God and the meaning of existence. When The Death appears to claim for his life, Antonius challengues her to a chess match. In this way, he pretends to gain some time to find something that gives meaning to his life.
