Johnnie is a machinist with two loves: his locomotive, the General, and his girlfriend Annabelle. When the Civil War broke out, Johnnie ran to enlist, but the army rejected him because he considered it more useful with his locomotive than firing at the front. However, Annabelle thinks he is a coward and does not want to see him again until she sees him in uniform.
