During Wold War II, the british officer Jack Celliers enters a Japanese prisoners camp. The camp major, captain Yonoi, believes in values such as discipline, honour and glory. To him, allied soldiers are cowards for surrending to the enemy instead of committing suicide. One of the prisoners, colonel Lawrence, tries to explain to his collegues the Japanese way of thinking, even though he can be considered a traitor for this. Everything changes when Yonoi starts feeling attracted to Celliers.
