Shubei Hirayama is a widower who lives with his 24-year-old daughter, Michiko. He feels old and exhausted, but comes to the conclusion that the girl should live her life, without being obliged to take care of him permanently. Despite Michiko's resistance to leaving her father, Shubei decides that she must marry Miura, a young man to whom she is attracted. But Miura is already engaged.
