Romano Patroni, a down-and-out architect now working on a steamboat, explains his unhappy life to a client he has just met, a Russian gentleman named Pavel. Despite his humble origins, Romano graduated from architecture school and married a wealthy heiress. Exhausted by a monotonous and empty life, Romano decides to spend some time at a spa in Tuscany, where he falls in love with a shy Russian woman with black eyes.
