A man of high society lives secluded in a castle, believing he is King Henry IV of the Holy Roman Empire. He has been like this for 20 years, since he suffered an accident and hit his head when he was disguised as this historical figure. His sister and a group of servants take care of him, maintaining the illusion that the world takes place in the Middle Ages. Now a psychiatrist has devised an elaborate plan to restore the man's sanity.
