Giovanni, a successful writer, and Lidia are a disenchanted bourgeois couple. One night they visit a friend who is in hospital with a terminal illness. Afterwards, they go to a party to present Giovanni's new book, although Lidia decides to go out for a walk in the city. Later they attend a millionaire's party together, where Giovanni flirts with the host's daughter and Lidia with a playboy. But nothing helps them escape from dissatisfaction and boredom.
