Algiers 1935. Mersault is a discreet and apathetic man, with a flat and inconsequential life. When his mother dies, he remains indifferent, without showing any emotion or shedding a single tear. Soon after, he begins a sentimental relationship with Marie, a woman who really means nothing to him. And when he agrees to help a neighbor in a matter involving a young Arab girl, Marsault ends up killing, without knowing why and in cold blood, the girl's brother. Marsault is arrested and charged with murder.
