At the end of World War II, Giovanna travels from Italy to Moscow in search of her husband, Antonio, a soldier who went missing during the Russian campaign of 1943. Giovanna refuses to believe that Antonio is dead. Years earlier, the couple had married and enjoyed their honeymoon just before Antonio was sent to the front. Their plan to make the authorities believe that Antonio was insane did not work. Now Giovanna, with only a photo of Antonio, is willing to do anything to find out where he is.
