Chuyia, and eight-year-old victim of child marriage, is left a widow in colonial India in 1938. Because of her situation, she is forced to enter an ashram, a residence for widows. There, the women live in utter neglect, condemned to atone for the sins of a past life, which they believe caused their husbands’ death. Chuyia’s arrival upends the live of other residents, revealing the power of friendship and challenging the oppressive rules that govern their existence.
