‘El destino de Maya’, by Tiina Lymi, has been awarded the Prize for Best Film at the eighth edition of the Barcelona-Sant Jordi International Film Festival (BCN FILM FEST). The film is a historical drama about a woman's struggle to support her family in a remote Finnish village in the 19th century.

The festival had more than 20,000 spectators, a 10% increase over the previous year. 

‘This edition of the festival, with relevant visits, intense colloquiums and presentations and very exciting moments, has met all expectations and the public has responded as never before. The reception of our proposals has been spectacular. We will continue working and advancing in our goal of a strong and open festival, which is useful and practical in the sector and which gives projection to the city of Barcelona", said Conxita Casanovas, director of the BCN FILM FEST.

Eduard Fernández, Clara Segura and Carles Sans made up this year's Official Jury. The Critics' Jury was made up of Marla Jacarilla, Esteve Plantada and Xavier Daniel.

The BCN FILM FEST 2024 has counted with:

- 69 films of which: 15 world premieres, 1 European, 20 Spanish and 11 Catalan.

- 49 presentations and talks with the presence of the talents of, among others, Meg Ryan, Richard Linklater, Paola Cortellesi, Vincent Perez, Belén Rueda, J.A. Bayona, Mikael Persbrandt, Arturo Valls, Éric Toledano, Olivier Nakache, Malena Alterio, Kike Maillo, Dani de la Orden, Clara Segura, Emma Vilarasau, David Verdaguer and Clara Lago.

- Talk by director Richard Linklater with the audience.

- 14 parallel activities in the different venues of the festival, among which:

- 7th edition of the Screenwriters and Industry Day with two round tables: ‘AI and creative process’ and the presentation of LAAB 2024 with the table ‘From book to screen’.

- Sitges Fantástico Podcast- 70 years of influence of the novel ‘I Am Legend’ by Richard Matheson.

- Meeting of Grup 62 authors with the participation of Ramón Gener, Jordi Puntí and Jaume Clotet.

- 9 activities at La Perla 22.

- 7 Festival venues: Cines Verdi, CaixaForum, Casa Seat, Institut Français, Ateneu Barcelonès, La Perla 22 and COAC.

- 1st edition of the Screen International Award for Catalan Producer of the Year.

The ninth edition of the BCN FILM FEST will be held from 23 to 30 April 2025.
