BCN FILM FEST accepts submissions for its Official Section (In Competition and Out of Competition), as well as for its parallel sections Cinema amb Gràcia and Zona Oberta. Preferred films selected for the Official Section are literary adaptations, productions based on historical events, or biopics about prominent figures. Films in the Official Section compete for the Best Film Award, ACCEC Critics’ Award, La Vanguardia Award for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, and Castell de Peralada Festival Award for Best Music.

In the last edition of the Festival, Fatih Akin’s “Amrum” won Best Film Award and Damiano Michieletto for “Primavera” won Best Director Award.

The festival also features parallel non-competitive sections. Cinema amb Gràcia showcases a selection of comedies from around the world. On the other hand, Zona Oberta is a section dedicated to films of special interest that, due to their particular characteristics, enrich the festival’s programming even though they do not meet the criteria for inclusion in the competitive sections.
