One morning, Harold Fry leaves home to post a letter. Recently retired, Harold responds to a letter from an old friend and co-worker of hers who, after a silence of almost twenty years, has just told him that she is in a hospital waiting about to die. As Harold prepares to send the letter, a sudden impulse compels him to carry the message himself to its friend on a trek across the country on foot.
