Tommy is a 5-year-old boy who lives with his mother, Nora, and stepfather, Frank. His father, presumed dead in the war, returns home unexpectedly. And, with the child as an involuntary witness, Frank kills Tommy's father. Nora and Frank ask him to forget everything. But the experience suffered in Tommy causes a psychological trauma that leaves him deaf, dumb and blind. Nobody can cure him. But over time, Tommy develops an amazing ability as a pinball player, which his mother and Frank try to take advantage of. Tommy becomes a famous star, a cult figure idolized by the masses.
